The Potential of Cross-polarization Information for Operational Sea Ice Monitoring

چکیده
RESUME The information content of ENVISAT ASAR alternating polarization data is evaluated with respect to operations at the Canadian Ice Service. A dual polarization data set covering an entire ice season is shown to have a higher information content compared to single polarization data. Automatic sea ice classification with dual polarization data is shown to have some potential to aid operational monitoring, but limitations due to system noise are noted.

Automated near Real Time Radarsat-2 Image Geo-processing and Its Application for Sea Ice and Oil Spill Monitoring
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from RADARSAT-1 are an important operational data source for several ice centres around the world. Sea ice monitoring has been the most successful real-time operational application for RADARSAT-1 data. These data are used by several national ice services as a mainstay of their programs. Most recently, Canadian Ice Service launched another new real-time operat...

متن کاملTowards Oil Slick Monitoring in the Arctic Environment
We investigate the potential of multi-polarization and multi-frequency SAR systems to discriminate oil-in-sea-ice mixtures from newly frozen and young sea ice. The dielectric properties of oil emulsions, for a range of oil volume fractions, and theoretical co-polarization ratios for relevant media are modeled and discussed. We also compare the co-polarization ratios computed from actual detecte...
متن کاملPotential of RADARSAT-2 data for operational sea ice monitoring
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from RADARSAT-1 are an important operational data source for several ice centres around the world. Whereas RADARSAT-1 is only capable of acquiring data at a single polarization, RADARSAT-2 will be capable of acquiring dual-polarization data in many wide-swath modes (most importantly ScanSAR) and fully polarimetric SAR data in a narrow 25-km swath mode. In thi...
متن کاملC-Band Multiple Polarization SAR for Ice Monitoring – What Can It Do for the Canadian Ice Service
Through the use of Envisat ASAR Alternating Polarization (AP) mode data, the Applied Science Section of the Canadian Ice Service (CIS) has been investigating the utility of multiple polarization SAR data for operational ice monitoring. This work will help CIS develop initial guidelines and recommendations for use of multiple polarization data in preparation for future SAR missions, RADARSAT-2, ...
